Here’s a shot from the front of my house taken from my driveway. Mine is on the right, neighbor’s is on the left.

Here is one of my buried car. That’s a lot of snow we need to move out of the way. My snow mounds are getting large already. I’m gonna have issues finding a place for all the snow.

As you may or may not know, Apple released iOS 4.1 last month. One of the new features added to the iPhone 4 was High Dynamic Range (HDR) photos. The basic rundown (as I understand it) of what happens is that the iPhone will take a picture 3 different ways in rapid succession, adjusting the exposure automatically for you. Then it tries to figure out which parts of the photos are the best from the 3 shots and then blends the best parts together into a single photo to give you an optimized shot. I’ve heard of this feature on high end DSLR cameras, but never on a mobile phone. I decided to try this out for myself to see how it looks.

Below you’ll see two photos, the left is the original shot and the one on the right is the HDR version. I took this photo outside my house during sundown.

You can see a huge difference between the photos. The sky is all washed out in the original photo. That’s just something you would have to deal with when taking pictures into the sun. Enter the HDR photo. The sky is fixed and looks blue like it’s supposed to be.

I’d have to say that this is a kick butt feature that I’m glad they added. This is one feature that I’ll definitely be using in the future.

So yesterday I went with some friends to Navy Pier in Chicago to check out the Tall Ships festival. I’ve never seen real life working sailing ships in person, so I thought it would be cool to check out. I learned lots of facts about these types of ships and it was fun to get to get on them and check them out.

From what I’ve seen in movies, the ships are actually much smaller than I imagined below deck. I was really hunched over down there trying to walk around. People back then (most of these ships date back at a least 100 years) must have been midgets. On one ship we toured (it was used during the battle of 1812), they told us the original crew would have been around 150 sailers. 50 working each shift, 3 shifts. I couldn’t figure out how in the heck they fit 100 people below deck to sleep while the workers were above deck. It was extremely tight quarters down there.

Overall it was a fun experience. I wish I could have foreseen the amount of people that were going to be there. As you can see from the shots I posted, it was very crowded. I wish we would have had more time there to get a chance to board more ships. Oh well, maybe next time.

So my house doesn’t have a dishwasher. Been living here for a little over 7 months and it is torture to do dishes by hand. Luckily my fiance lives with me, and does most of the dirty work. Well, to ease her pain, I finally got around to getting a dishwasher installed in the house!

A week ago, Friday, I hit up Home Depot for some materials. Her uncle came by on Saturday and helped me to remove a cabinet next to my sink, install a dishwasher and build a side panel to cover the exposed side of the dishwasher. We ran into some snags with the electrical but it all turned out ok and got it done before dinner time.

The next day I hit up Home Depot again after I decided on a plan for the cabinet that we removed. I was going to turn it into a rolling island!. Got our stuff and she helped me with the project. We added a back to the cabinet, a top, and casters to the bottom. A little caulk, spackle, and some sanding to cover up all the seems and we were done for the evening.

Fast forward to this past weekend. We spent Friday night putting on the base coat (primer) on the new side panel and on the rolling island as well as a first coat of paint. On Saturday we did our second coat of paint and added a little peel and stick cabinet liner to the top of the island. And the project was complete!

In the future we want to get a nice large butcher block to attach to the island, but seeing as they cost a lot, we are going to wait for a little while before we do it.

Below I have a picture of what the kitchen looked like when I first moved in and what it looks like today.

Today they finally completed the project they started this week for giving us techs more light by adding some florescent lighting directly above every bench. Otherwise it was extremely dark in here and hard to see when trying to soldering tiny electronic parts. We all had some other type of temporary desk lighting of some kind to cope with the darkness of this building they put us in. We been in this building since october last year, and it’s half as bright as the old building. I’d have to say, it’s a big difference.

So last year I went on a Caribbean cruise with friends and family. One of our pit stops included the country of Belize. Here are two of my favorite photos that I took from there that I thought I would share.

This first one below is a shot as we were leaving Belize City and heading back to the cruise ship. The water there is beautiful and also very shallow for a long distance. The cruise ship has to dock in the water and we took smaller transport boats to get us to and back from Belize.

This next shot was while we were on our way to do some cave tubing (which was a lot of fun). I snapped this shot while walking toward the area where the this cave tubing camp area was. It was located in the middle of the jungle. The scenary was fantastic while we were walking and while in the tubes underground. I wish I had brought a waterproof camera with me.
